SQUARE DANCE ETIQUETTE
All of us should remind ourselves occasionally about the etiquette involved with being a thoughtful square dancer. Sometimes the old-timers forget a particular courtesy expected from considerate dancers. Check yourselves to see how you’re doing and how you might improve.
- Arrive on time if possible.
- Help setup and replace the facility before and after dancing.
- Square up quickly when the caller is ready to begin the tip.
- Join the nearest square and hold up your hand until the square is full.
- Don’t pass up one square to dance in another square.
- Introduce yourself or welcome the other members of the square.
- Honor dancers who do not wish to be twirled.
- Listen attentively to the caller. Don’t try to teach others unless asked.
- Thank all dancers and your partner at the end of each tip.
- Learn all the new moves as they are taught by the caller. Be informed.
- Overlook mistakes in others. No dancer should be made to feel bad about a mistake. You may have made a few of your own.
- Dance with others, especially guests who are visiting our club.
- Men should make sure the callers’ taw dances often.
- Dress properly. Men should always wear long sleeves. Square dance apparel is always in fashion.
- Ladies keep your hands empty. (No damp handkerchiefs.)
- Don’t offer a ‘dead fish’ hand or wrist hold. Men should lead the woman firmly, but don’t jerk her. Ladies should respond to being led.
- Be friendly. If you’re not making friends you’re not getting the most out of square dancing. Consider yourself a host to all the other dancers.
- SMILE! SMILE AGAIN! THEN SMILE SOME MORE.
